The Chapter Continues for Marvel Phase Four

Marvel continues onto their next chapter with “Phase 4” introducing new faces and continuing the stories of previous superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving EHHS Marvel fans intrigued. Phase Four includes 6 new shows and 5 new movies.

WandaVision was about how Wanda Maximoff and Vision are a peculiar couple with superpowers living in Westview, NJ, where they try to live a semi-normal life. However things aren't what they seem to be.EHHS History teacher Ms. Caitlin King, a Marvel fanatic, shares that she has always loved superhero movies. Her dad was the one who got her into these types of movies by having her watch Star Wars when she was little. She has always been interested in science fiction, goes to Comic-Con, and collects comic books. Ms. Kings shares that she likes the tv-shows being released in Phase 4, saying: “ I like that they are split into chunks with different episodes and taking a deeper look at the characters.” She enjoyed Scarlet Witch and Vision’s story coming to life and that the tv-show Loki brought a different character to his own story. Ms. King's favorite tv-show was WandaVision. She liked that she got to examine the relationship between Vision and how she [Wanda] deals with his loss. Ms. King states, “ Even though we know her as the Scarlet Witch, they have never used her name until WandaVision so I’m interested in where her character goes.” Her favorite villain from Phase 4 was Agatha from WandaVision. She shared, “ Her character was the annoying neighbor and then all of a sudden she is this powerful witch who is fighting Wanda.” She shares that she is excited about Agatha’s show called Agatha: House of Harkness.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is concerned with how Sam Wilson (the new Captain America, formerly The Falcon) is struggling to live up to the Captain’s name along with his friend Bucky Barnes, who is also fighting with his previous history.

Loki was the third show released and it's about Loki being trapped by the TVA (Time Variance Authority), where he encounters different versions of himself.EHHS Junior Camille Dudley is a Marvel fan and shares that her favorite tv-show from this phase was Loki. She liked Loki more than the other tv-shows because: “The development of Loki’s character is amazing. You can see when he is trying to help and in a way changes his ways.” Her least favorite tv-show was Hawkeye since it didn't go farther with the character development. Although Loki was her favorite tv-show she believes that WandaVision had the best plot, characters, villains, and visuals, she strongly believes, “ It was amazing to see Wanda deal with her trauma and grow but also to see her transformation into the Scarlet Witch and stopping Agatha and tricking her too.” Camille’s favorite memory from Marvel’s phase 4 was watching Black Widow with her friends since it was an anticipated movie that she had been patiently waiting for.

What If..? is an animated series about many different timelines and different outcomes that the superheroes of Marvel could have gone through.

Hawkeye is Clint Barton teaming up with the newest edition of hero Kate Bishop to untangle a criminal scheme.

Lastly Moon Knight, the latest edition, is about Steven Grant discovering his identity disorder and unraveling that he shares his body with a mercenary while being indentured to the Egyptian Pantheon. Mr. Adam Gardner, a History teacher at EHHS, has been a fan of Marvel for about 30 years. He started watching Marvel through the live-action tv-shows; he states that his favorite show was “ The Incredible Hulk.” Mr. Gardner believes that Marvel's name allows them to dig deeper into characters who aren't as recognized by the viewers. Mr. Gardner’s thoughts on Marvel inclusivity are, “ The fact that a show like Moon Night can come out, an Egyptian superhero is now on tv; like we have never seen that before or like Black Widow, a female lead in a superhero movie. It is much more diverse and inclusive.” Mr. Gardner believes that Marvel is telling a bigger story with all these different backgrounds of characters and incorporating all these different topics into Marvel is remarkable. Moon Knight was Mr. Gardner's preferred show because it was a different superhero who the viewers aren’t familiar with and he also liked how they took a superhero who was challenged by his own belief and how he had to overcome himself.

Marvel's “Phase 4” kickstarted with Black Widow, where she finally confronts her dark history of being a Russian spy.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are focused on Shang-Chi and where he has to confront the mysterious Ten Rings organization.Another Marvel fan at EHHS is Junior Mia Flores Soto who has been interested in Marvel because her brother introduced her and ever since she has been watching Marvel with her family (she has been a fan for 9-10 years). Her thoughts on Marvel expanding to tv shows are, “ I’m excited to see what the MCU has in store for these mini series because the DC Comics Tv-shows have been stealing the spotlight for years but have recently declined as of late on the CW channel.” Mia likes the idea that Marvel is incorporating tv-shows to take a deeper look at previous side characters whose story wasn't shown. Her favorite movie released in this phase was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. She states that she liked it because: “Of the amazing character and cultural inclusivity. It was amazing to see how well Marvel was able to incorporate a lot of AAPI influence from the numerous Asian actors, with the filming locations and language incorporation.” Although Mia holds a special place for Phase 1, she is content with the current Phase 4 and she is looking forward to seeing the MCU and all the new characters that Marvel is introducing and all the inclusivity too.

Eternals introduces us to 10 new superheroes that find their way back to save humanity.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is about Peter Parker's secret identity being revealed and the overcoming of his two lives of being a superhero and being a teenager. He encounters many villains that are out to get him and the two previous Spidermen.

Now the newest edition to this phase is Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which was released May 6, 2022. It is about Dr. Stephen Strange casts a prescribed spell that casts a portal to the multiverse where strange threats start to emerge.

With Marvel releasing Doctor Strange the Multiverse of Madness fans have a lot of theories as to what could happen. Ms. King believes that Loki and a version of Iron Man as Tom Cruise will appear. While fans like Camille cannot wait to see Scarlet Witch once again and see how she fits into the plot of the movie. Mr. Gardner has already watched the movie and is not allowed to spoil anything since it's a Marvel thing. The next tv-show coming up for phase 4 is Ms. Marvel along with the next coming movie Thor Love and Thunder with the return of Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman.
