Super Bowl Commercials Blitzed Viewers

Commercials are arguably the most popular part of the first Sunday in February. On February 2, 2020, thousands of people gathered around their television, computer, and phone screens. Not to watch the big game as one might believe, but to watch the commercials. This year, the Super Bowl LIV commercials stepped up to the plate, bringing laughter and tears to their audiences. The commercials featured many big names like actor Jason Momoa, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, and even TikTok stars Charli D’Amelio and Brittany Tomlinson (better known as the “Kombucha Girl”). The commercials this year really held the line.

According to USA Today’s Ad Meter, the most popular commercial was from Jeep. The commercial featured Bill Murray in a parody of the 1993 film Groundhog Day and brought together Murray, costar Stephen Tobolowsky, and a furry groundhog friend. As far as Super Bowl commercials go, this one sets the bar pretty high, although it definitely helps that this year’s Super Bowl and Groundhog Day fell on the same day.

EHHS art teacher, Mrs. Sara Cooper, was a fan of Rocket Mortgage’s commercial featuring Aquaman actor Jason Momoa. This commercial showed the “real” Jason Momoa, who is not as muscular and heroic as everyone seems to think. This Jason Momoa is scrawny, short, and balding. Mrs. Cooper explained, “It was so funny and I loved how his small wife picked up the bar.” The wife in question is Lisa Bonet, who is shown taking the bar from Momoa while he struggles to bench press.

Bianca Apuzzo, EHHS junior and avid football fan, said that her favorite commercial was Hyundai’s “Smaht Pahk.” This commercial pokes fun at the Boston accent where the letter “r” seems to disappear. The commercial shows Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), and Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame) as they marvel at John Krasinski (The Office) and his new car. The three Bostonians discuss the car’s driverless parking, or “pahking” feature. The commercial also has a surprise appearance from retired Red Sox slugger, David Ortiz, known as “Big Papi.” Elaborating on her love of the commercial, Bianca said, “It was just so funny, and it had Big Papi in it. Also, who doesn’t love John Krasinski, Chris Evans, and Rachel Dratch?”

The market for Super Bowl commercials has definitely increased since the first Super Bowl. The average cost of a commercial this year was over $5 million. The cost is due in part to the competition to get a commercial slot on the big game day. There is competition for slots because the Super Bowl is one of the most viewed annual events, meaning advertisers are reaching a larger audience than they would on any other given day. This larger audience also prompts advertisers to put added effort into the commercial itself. Due to the company’s added effort, Super Bowl commercials have become an unforgettable part of every February, leaving almost everyone with a favorite commercial memory.
