Some Truth About Climate Change

In February 2021, Texas was hit by a devastating and record-breaking snowstorm. These kinds of record-breaking weather disasters are happening much more frequently in the last 61 years. Scientists claim that climate change is to blame. Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in the world. This could be a change in how much rain a place usually gets in a year or it could be a change in a place's usual temperature for a month or season. This could be a change in Earth's usual temperature or it could be a change in where rain and snow usually fall on Earth. Weather can change in just a few hours.

Climate takes hundreds or even millions of years to change. Places that are affected the most by climate change are coastal communities. Several places in the world such as Haiti are negatively affected as the warming climate is causing sea levels to rise.

EHHS Science teacher, Mr. David Oshana, said, “Having grown up on the shoreline in CT I have seen sea levels rise here since I was a child. I am sure that many students here in EHHS have seen coastal flooding on more than one occasion.” Climate change is important because it can affect the environment for plants, animals, and even humans. Rising temperatures and sea levels can force animals to leave certain habitats. EHHS students can recycle more materials by doing this; it reduces our need to produce more materials with fossil fuels. During Covid-19, it is tough but carpooling is another option to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

It is important to add that climate change is a natural process. Our Earth has gone through many cycles of heating and cooling. The cycles are natural and not caused by humans. However, it is proven that Humans are causing the climate to warm at a faster rate than is normal, according to Mr. Oshana. If we reduce anything that burns fossil fuels, we could stop climate change. People could use more fuel-efficient vehicles. We can use more Green energy sources to produce electricity as well, these are things like solar panels and wind turbines. Climate change mainly has to do with the warming of our air and oceans over a period of time. It is kind of like the snowball effect; when the climate warms more ice melts over land which raises the sea levels even more. Climate change can cause sea levels to rise in coastal communities like East Haven. There are many different organizations that help reduce Greenhouse gas emissions. The Department of Energy is a federal agency that works on solutions to prevent climate change. They have invested billions of dollars in the solar industry, for example. The mission of the Energy Department is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.

So EHHS, find ways to help the town! Pick up trash, clean up the trash around the beaches, recycle, use less fuel and walk around. Do anything you can think of that will help us stop climate change from ruining our world.
