EHHS Juniors and Seniors Spend a “Night Under the Stars” as the Year Winds Down

As juniors and seniors are preparing for the end of the school year, the end of the year events start to approach, prom and graduation. Prom this year includes juniors and seniors and will take place tonight, May 20th starting at 6pm. Graduation looms around the corner and will take place at Crisafi Field on June 21st at 6pm.

There was no prom last year due to the COVID-19 shutdown, but compared to 2019, there are many differences. PCR tests, mask wearing, eating dinner outdoors and dancing indoors while socially distancing are probably the biggest differences.

The prom theme this year is “A Night Under the Stars,” and will be held at WoodWinds in Branford, CT on Thursday May 20th from 6 pm to 10 pm, but arrive no later than 6:30 pm or you will be denied entry. In order to attend, students must present a negative PCR COVID test from a sample taken within 72 hours of the event, which according to Mayo Clinic is a nasal or throat swab to detect genetic material of the virus. Students who received their second dose of the vaccine on or before May 6th do not need to be tested.

Mr. Vincent DeNuzzo, EHHS principal, explains that masks are required to be worn, and will only be taken off when eating. Students do need to be mindful of social distancing, so they will need to keep the dance floor as spaced as possible. Students should avoid large clusters on the dance floor and close contact. Food and beverages will be provided, and that designated area will be held outdoors with tables and chairs outside under a tent. It is advised that parents/guardians transport their own students to the prom and do not carpool. Party busses and limousines are not allowed, and students who violate that will not be allowed to attend the event. Students may leave the prom at any time, but may not return. The restrictions put in place are not only to protect everyone in the school community but to try and avoid any major outbreaks.

According to the email sent out by Mr. DeNuzzo, 2021 Graduation is finalized and is planned as the following:

“The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021 will be held on Monday, June 21st at 6:00 pm at Crisafi Field on the campus of East Haven High School. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held on a rain date of Tuesday, June 22nd at 6:00 pm, also at Crisafi Field.”

The tickets are going to be distributed after the graduation rehearsal on June 18th. Each student will be given 4 tickets, which will grant guests access to seats on our football field. The Crisafi Field gates will open at 5:00 pm on June 21st to allow for guests to begin seating. Guests will be provided a self-adhesive bracelet to wear for the event, which will allow entrance to the field.

As an accommodation to those who may not be able to attend in-person will still be able to view the ceremony Live Stream by the Technology Services Department and broadcast on the East Haven Public Schools YouTube channel. The video will then be made available on YJTV/ETV.

Understanding that this year has been a challenge is the sense of having to accommodate to the changes made, the principal and the class advisors hopes are for students to try to make the best of the circumstances and have a memorable senior year that is memorable for good things, and not what COVID-19 took away from them, according to Mrs. Ashley Bogart, Senior Class Advisor and English Teacher at EHHS.

“We understand that these are important moments for seniors and their families and we want to make them as traditional as possible, while at the same time keeping in mind the health, safety and well-being of our students and the entire community,” DeNuzzo assures students. The goal is to make sure students are completely safe, but at the same time making sure that everyone has what they want.
