Coach Dunne Celebrates 29 Years at EHHS

Coach and educator Mr. Martin “Rusty'' Dunne has been reflecting on his 29 years of involvement in EHHS athletics ahead of the upcoming winter track and field season. Throughout the years, Coach Dunne has provided countless teams with the utmost support. He has remained dedicated to every individual, bringing many EHHS athletes to greater heights.

Coach Dunne has been interested in sports since grade school. At a young age he participated in baseball, basketball, and football. He went on to run track and play football at Notre Dame High School. When it was time for college, he had no issue in choosing what he wanted to study. “To be honest, I knew exactly what I was going to do. In the sixth grade I wrote that I wanted to be a Phys Ed. teacher someday, and I also wanted to coach football and track” Dunne comments. He went on to study just that, attending Southern Connecticut State University and majoring in physical education.

Coach Dunne’s previous involvement in college football gave him more than enough experience as a coach by the time he joined EHHS athletics, with his coaching career beginning in 1979. “I coached college football which was fantastic,” Dunne mentions. “I coached at Southern Connecticut, Milford Academy, Central Connecticut, University of New Haven, and University of Connecticut”. Coach Dunne has had roles as a defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, linebacker coach and more during his previous years in college football. After coaching football for about a decade, Dunne joined EHHS athletics in 1993. There, he began serving as Head Football Coach, as well as Head Track and Field Coach. “I’ve had great football-related memories over all those years.” His 29 years as head track and field coach have also met many milestones. Earlier this year, Coach Dunne’s outdoor girls track and field team made history by winning the SCC West Sectional Championship, the first sectional title in EHHS history.

On top of his multiple coaching accomplishments, Coach Dunne has also been recently inducted into the East Haven Hall of Fame. This hall of fame, located in the lobby of our very own EHHS, highlights individuals involved in our town with outstanding achievements. Dunne was among one of the seven people honored and inducted in 2019. Coach Dunne has spent years dedicated to EHHS, both as a teacher and a mentor. The Yellowjackets hope to see more memories made as he returns for his 29th year as Head Track and Field Coach.
