.Rupaul’s Drag Race is a show that is important to be seen in America because of the lack of representation in it’s media, TV shows, and movies. Rupaul’s Drag Race is a show that uses its platform to have diverse people of the LGBT community, give them opportunity to showcase their talent, and to be able to share their stories with America.
Rupaul’s Drag Race has gotten more popular since its premiere, even winning a primetime Emmy for outstanding Reality competition program. It also took pop culture by storm because the viewers started to spread their catchphrases and the lingo heard on the show, such as “okurrr”, “Yasss”, “Shady”, and “Sickening”. The word “Okurr” initially introduced by Laganja Estranja on season six of Rupaul's Drag Race and ‘okurr’ was picked up by Khloe Kardashian when she was a guest judge on season six. She introduced the word okurr on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Cardi B picked it up from her and has been using it during the uprising of her career.
Another influencing moment of Rupaul's Drag Race on pop culture is when Saturday Night Live performed a skit on May 6, 2017 in a Auto Body shop of employees admit that they love Rupaul’s Drag Race and then proceed to do a Lip Sync For Your Life, which is an iconic moment that happens in every Drag race episode.
Rupaul’s Drag race is important to me because when growing up there wasn’t a lot of representation in TV shows, movies, etc. So, when I came out and discovered the show, it showed me a different perspective of the LGBT community from what was usually shown to me before discovering it. Rupaul’s Drag Race made me feel a sense of normalcy in my life because of the many contestants with different backgrounds. Although the current climate of acceptance and tolerance in the USA has progressed a lot, Rupaul’s Drag Race is still important for people who don't understand the LGBT community and give a different perspective. This show will show them that were all the same and all love to be ourselves. It's especially important for Rupaul’s Drag Race to continue and help the youth or anyone who is confused about their sexual orientation and to have that representation for them. It is important to see actual people from the LGBT community that are from different ethnicities and have different upbrings. Having all those types of representation can make people become aware that there is someone who has experienced something just like them and that they are not alone. Rupaul’s Drag Race brings this great message to the world, and that’s why I think everybody should recognize the show’s important and give it a try.
