Driving for a Cause

Do you enjoy golfing? Do you like supporting your community? On Friday, June 21st, the East Haven Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a golf tournament at the Alling Memorial Golf Course in New Haven. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to towards their five scholarships that have been made available for EHHS students.

Over the past fifteen years, around 18 teams join the tournament each year with up to four golfers each. The registration fee for a single golfer to join the tournament is $125. This fee will cover 18-holes of golf, cart rental, a goodie bag, continental breakfast before the tournament, along with the luncheon and raffle after the tournament at the Irish American Community Center. All golfers of any experience level over the age of 18 are welcome to join the tournament as long as they register by Wednesday, June 18th.

The East Haven Chamber of Commerce has maintained a close relationship with EHHS over the years. The scholarships allow the Chamber to support the students at EHHS who may be in need of financial assistance in order to further pursue their education. The scholarships were first awarded 40 years ago by Joan Hurley and Mayor Frank Messina when the Chamber was revitalized. The Frank Messina and Joan Hurley scholarships are still awarded to this day and are funded through the Golf Tournament.

The five categories for the available scholarships are business, art, sports, health, and community. EH seniors can apply to these scholarships through the guidance office. The applications will be reviewed by a committee from the Chamber of Commerce on the basis of academics, community service, and need, the scholarships will be awarded to the students on the EHHS Scholarship Night. Recipients will receive $500 each to put towards their education.

If you are interested, you can find more information or register for the Tournament on the East Haven Chamber of Commerce website.
