Calling All EHHS Students! Community Service Opportunities Available!
Community service is a great way to help those around you, create new experiences, and learn important skills in life. For example, you can gain leadership skills, social skills, and teamwork. East Haven High School requires students to complete a total of twenty hours of community service throughout their four years of high school in order to graduate. The school year is coming to an end and so is the deadline for having your hours in. If you are an underclassman or a desperate senior who hasn’t reached twenty hours yet, here are some ideas for you:The Trolley Museum is a great place for community service hours! Students are able to volunteer here all year round, especially during special events. Holidays such as Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, July Fourth, and Halloween are some popular events in which volunteers are usually most needed. Volunteers tend to work on landscaping, carpentry, working inside the museum tiding it up, cleaning the yard, and they can also volunteer as tour guides. The secretary at the Trolley Museum states, “The trolley wouldn’t be functioning if it wasn’t for the volunteers. They put in so much time and effort.” The office is located at 17 River St., East Haven. They can be contacted at their telephone: (203) 467-6927.
Another local organization to complete you community service at is Hagaman Memorial Library. Litzy Garcia, a junior at East Haven High School, has completed 56 hours of community service by volunteering there. At the library, she would read a book review magazine called Voya and choose which new releases the library should buy. She also helped organize events at the library. Litzy states, “Now I don’t have to worry about not having enough hours of community service next year.” She also she she recommends volunteering at the library because, “you can volunteer with friends and actually have a nice time helping out.” Anyone is welcomed to volunteer.
The East Haven Food Bank is another great way to complete your community service. Students are able to volunteer on Saturday’s from 11am-12pm. Volunteers work on restocking shelves, sorting out the food by categories, and keep count of a checklist on how much food is being brought in and handed out. Angelo Dematteo, a volunteer at the Food Bank says, “I’ve been working here for 10 years and it’s been amazing!” The office is located 39 Park Place, East Haven- across from the Green. They can be contacted at their telephone: (203) 467-4668 every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 10:45am.
