Honest Review: Creed II
Creed II, the eighth installment of the Rocky series, was released in theaters November 21, 2018 and immediately was a hit. Three years since the last movie, fans of the Rocky and Creed series highly anticipated the release of this movie and it was so worth the wait. Michael B. Jordan makes a return to the screen as main character, Adonis Creed, and Sylvester Stallone as the notorious Rocky Balboa. Stallone was, as with all of the Rocky and Creed movies, a screenwriter for the film.
The movie did extremely well in the box-office. In its opening weekend, the movie made close to $36 million, placing in second ranking for the weekend, playing in over three thousand theaters. Worldwide, the movie made over $166 million in total.
Spoilers Ahead! Proceed with caution:
Picking up a bit into the future from where Creed left off, Adonis is winning matches in efforts of receiving the champion title. The main storyline of the movie being Adonis Creed, whose father, Apollo Creed, died in the ring at the knock-out punch of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, getting called out by Drago’s son, Viktor Drago. The decision to go for the fight was not supported by Rocky, so Adonis trained with Tony. Creed goes into the fight against Drago and it takes a toll on him as a person. The movie not only revolves around the fight, but goes in-depth to Adonis’ life and relationships with his expecting girlfriend, and touches on father-son bonds.
The movie is worth the watch in my opinion. As a fan of the Rocky series, it’s a must to watch the Creed movies. The movie kept me entertained all the way through and was a great watch. This being said, it did not surpass Creed. This opinion is supported by my classmate, Josh Rao, who says “Creed II was great, but not better than Creed. That movie was awesome”. If a third Creed is produced, I will be one of the first to watch, and I have no doubts that it will hold up.
