Gender Roles in the Media
Dear Editor of The Comet,
Being the highest-grossing film franchise of all time with $16.6 billion at the global box office, you would not think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) would not have gender equality in it’s films.
Many people develop their beliefs about gender roles in society from what they see in the media. I further developed my understanding of this by analyzing MCU movies with (mostly) human-like characters, which was The Avengers and Captain America: Civil War. In the movies I looked for and tracked the different roles held by men and women. These films portray the commonly held stereotypes about men and women through the actions of the characters, which perpetuates these stereotypes in society. I found female characters are scarce, and are used as secondary characters and not the main ones. This can influence people to think women are not able to have major roles or powerful roles in society.
Marvel’s first standalone female superhero movie, Captain Marvel, is set to come out next year. This media source has gone far too long without gender equality demonstrated in their movies. Let’s fight for gender equality together. It all starts with awareness. For more information, visit my Facebook page, Gender equality for the Marvel Cinematic Universe -MCU
