New Year, New Advisory

Here at EHHS, everyone has experienced a little change to start the new school year; all of the advisory classes have been changed. This has left both students and faculty puzzled as to why this happened and how it may affect everyone in the building.

This new change has caused many people in the building to ponder why the advisories switched. While the answer is not definite, it is said that it is associated with the teacher’s contract. All teachers at EHHS are required to teach classes outside of the ones they are certified in; advisory is one of these classes. According to some of the teachers who have been in the building longer, an advisory change has only occurred once in the time since it was made a class. Hence, students aren't alone in wondering what exactly happened.

For many, advisory has been important to all students since its introduction to EHHS. This is especially true for upperclassmen, who have had the same advisory class for multiple years. Unfortunately, this advisory switch up has left a majority of students disappointed, including myself, since advisory is a unique experience compared to the normal class. Rather than doing the typical learning that we are all used to, advisory allowed us to establish new relationships with both other students and teachers. Mrs. Juliet Goraieb, who has been in charge of all advisory activities for three years, stressed this when she said, “The biggest purpose of advisory is all about connections and building relationships and students having a teacher that they feel like they can go to for anything. Then above and beyond that which is to make sure the kids are getting some of the things that we think that they need to be successful.” After having my advisory for multiple years, I can say that the class has, in fact, helped me in all those ways. For example, whenever I had a certain question about school, I found myself usually turning to my advisor. This was because of the good relationship that was built in advisory classes. I am sure many other students have likewise experienced this relationship. Unfortunately, since all the advisories have been changed, almost every student has to start a new relationship with their new teacher. Although this can lead to more of the relationships within the school, it can also lead to students losing the relationships they have built for the past years. One of my peers, senior Kyle Hubbell, also agreed, saying, “When I saw that the advisories got switched I was bummed out because I had one of my favorite teachers that I was able to connect to, and I had a lot of my friends in it also.” Sadly for students like Kyle and me, we will have to move on from our relationships with our old advisory teachers and peers in EHHS.

Although the new advisories have not had the best response from all people in the building, there is still some excitement about the transition. With the transition, students will be exposed to more relationships with both peers and teachers. This can allow students to have more than one person to go to if they have questions. They will now have the opportunity to find a new adult they can fully trust and go to when needed. Teachers can also experience benefits from the advisory switch. For example, teachers will get to meet new students that they possibly never had before. Just like how students learn from teachers, the teachers can also learn something from establishing relationships with new students. “I don't get to know every kid on a personal basis. All of us teachers go into teaching because we deeply care about education and we deeply care about the youth of this community and so for me I'm excited because I get to meet a whole new batch of kids,” said Mrs. Goraieb.

Overall I believe that both students and teachers should be excited about the new advisories. While it is disappointing that we have to abandon our previous relationships, our new advisories allow us to establish even more relationships within the school community. Therefore, students will be able to have a plethora of teachers that they can trust in the building.
