2017: A Year in Review

2017 was an eventful year. From Donald Trump moving into the office, to the controversies surrounding YouTube stars. Three massive hurricanes hit Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico, respectively, leaving destruction of about $200 billion. The heroic acts that followed however were priceless. For example, JJ Watt raised about in $37 million in donations for Hurricane Harvey relief.

To start 2017, Donald Trump moved into the White House. What exactly has he done in 2017 though? He advanced towards building a wall by testing multiple structures and he pulled the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal. As the year ends, and a new one begins, I fully expect there to be plenty of headlines about President Trump. Whether it will be about his tweets, loud-mouth, or decision making. Donald Trump is always the center of attention.

Logan and Jake Paul were a topic of discussion, these YouTube stars (specifically Jake Paul) have made a lot of remarks that have made a lot of people angry. Not only comments, but pictures/videos as well. Jake Paul uploaded a video to YouTube of him in the Aokigahara Forest (Suicide Forest) in Japan, showing and belittling a dead person. This inevitably, led to Jake Paul taking a break from YouTube.

There was also controversy about Keaton Jones and his mother. Keaton Jones was the boy who spoke out to bullies, but then it backfired on him when his mom was shown to be a racist. Everybody was angry about it, and it was probably the biggest YouTube story of 2017.

There was more bad stuff too, because there was two big mass shootings that happened in the US. One of the shootings was at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas where Devin Patrick Kelley walked in and fired at 46 people. 26 of them died and the rest were injured. Another was at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. Like the previous shooting, Stephen Paddock did the same by firing at a crowd (of approximately 22,000 people), killing 86 people and 546 of them being left injured. Both these shootings are in the top 5 deadliest shootings in the United States.

A lot of celebrity deaths crushed the United States. The deaths included former Cy Young winner, Roy Halladay; singer Tom Petty; Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner; coming rap artist, Lil Peep; Linkin Park singer, Chester Bennington; Soundgarden singer, Chris Cornell; Veronica Mars star, Brad Bufanda and Rob and Big star, Christopher ‘Big Black’ Boykin. People mourned and payed there condolences. They will never be forgotten.

Out with 2017, in with 2018. America, as a whole, has changed in a single year, and I expect when 2018 ends there will be a lot to talk about as well. 2018 will see the second year of Donald Trump’s term as president, the planned development of the wall, probably some more natural disasters, more controversies, and the class of 2018 high school graduation!
