East Haven Needs New Superintendent!

Our town is undergoing the process of looking for a new superintendent to take the place

of Dr. Portia Bonner. The East Haven Board of Education held a focus group on Thursday, September 8th to receive input from parents, community, members, and students. They are also working with the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE). CABE is in charge of searching for candidates and then putting them through the interview and qualifications process. Everyone’s voice is important because the new superintendent will be deciding many aspects of our school culture.

Besides having a master’s degree, in any subject matter from an accredited school, the position of superintendent requires several more certifications. It’s expected that the new candidate will have had at least five years of teaching experience. It’s also a bonus if the new candidate has a some degree or experience in management. What the superintendent basically does is work with the Board of Ed. to set the agenda and create a budget. He/she is in charge of keeping the Board informed of events in the district also tries to recommend what to get done every day.

Several students have expressed different ideas that they hope the new superintendent will take into consideration. A few students hoped the the superintendent would bring a new school budget to the Board of Ed. to be reconsidered and distributed differently. Senior student Dylan Mansingh, hoped the new superintendent “would give more funding to the anime club.” Another student who would like to remain anonymous, would like some of the football team’s budget to be cut and distributed to other sports teams. Of course, every student and member of the community have different interests which is why it’s so important to let your voice be heard by participating in the district’s focus groups or writing to the Board of Ed.
